# Pandarama

> Pandarama is a painter and muralist based in Larnaca, Cyprus. Inspired by the Japanese idea of kawaii — softness, innocence, kindness and emotional warmth — Pandarama expresses serious themes in a soft, slightly naive way through images of animals whose eyes have no pupils: pandas, foxes, bears, badgers, lemurs, chameleons. The studio work is oil on canvas; the public work is large acrylic murals on the streets of Larnaca.

## Artist statement

Pandarama is not just an alias of mine. It is my different sub-personality through which consciously and unconsciously I reflect on what matters, and on many other things as well.

I didn’t immediately reveal it in front of a wide audience. At first, it was small sketches for friends and colleagues, and I wasn’t really sure whether to turn it into something more serious. But during my trip to Japan I became more familiar with the philosophy of kawaii and the way it is used even in serious institutions. Kawaii is a special attitude toward the world that values softness, innocence, kindness, and emotional warmth. Based on this I built the character of Pandarama and moved from simple drawings to full scale fine art.

I intentionally express serious themes in a soft, slightly naive way through images of animals. A key feature of my style is the absence of pupils in the characters’ eyes. This is similar to how we see animals at night, frozen in the headlights. It creates the impression that they are suspended in a state of inner concentration — and remain in that state.

When creating each art work, I try to reach a feeling that the painting has soul. Thus it doesn’t simply hang on the wall, but becomes some kind of a totem resident of the space, a guardian of comfort and mood.
